If you visit the campuses of many universities in the USA, you will find that much of their campus computing is concentrated in basements. This is because those specialized spaces to support computer infrastructure were built during the 1960s—a time of civil unrest in the USA, particularly on college campuses. It was felt that the large mainframe computers of the day would be targets of anti-corporate sabotage. Basement bunkers were more defensible and generally didn’t have handy windows for tossing firebombs through.

I think we’ve got to give Lil Nas X the “first mover” award for making racist country fans lose their shit. They redefined what qualified as “Country Music” to get “Old Town Road” off the Country charts. What a joke.
While Beyoncé is this generation’s Country “cross back” pop star, this has been going on for many decades—heck even Elvis did a country album. There are several people that I love who are starting to realize later in life that they may be dealing with executive function disorders. They are at all different points in their journeys, from denial through acceptance.
I’ve learned from listening to many of you who have been diagnosed with executive function disorders late in life. Now my question is, were there specific articles or other information that helped you understand what was going on with you and provide guidance and strategies on how to proceed? What interventions helped you on your journeys and led you to seek formal diagnosis and support?

At one time Danielle organized our kids into creating care packages for the unhoused. Food, water, toiletries, etc in easy carry bags. We then took the kids downtown and distributed the bags among the folks sheltering around Lake Eola, talked with them, and introduced our kids. Small effort and self funded, but appreciated.

Ten years ago today I found a tiny feral kitten, nearly dead from hookworms, in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. I was unable to leave her, and unable to have her put down. We named her Maddie (after the hurricane) and she is living her best life with us.

I had a weird situation where I had a root shell on a remote Linux server that was experiencing a file system issue. No userspace commands were working except my shell builtins (echo, cd, and so on). I decided to reboot, but the "reboot" command, "init 6", "systemctl reboot", and "shutdown" commands wouldn't work. I couldn't visit the system in person and there was no remote power option.
Just a reminder that when all else is lost you can hard reboot a Linux system remotely via /proc/sys (assuming you happen to have a root shell on the machine):
echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger
This is a hard reboot. There's no file system sync, your databases go down hard, and this can really ruin your day. But just remember this little trick if you get painted into a corner.

“We’re teaching math wrong” (part N/???)
When you were introduced to sine, cosine, and tangent, I’m going to bet you were introduced to them in terms of triangles. Maybe you remember learning “SOH-CAH-TOA” to keep it all straight. Then maybe much later in your curriculum they showed you the unit circle, radian measure, and had you memorize a bunch of facts about signs and quadrants, etc.
I’m here to tell you that your confusion was natural because they taught you the subject exactly backwards. Trigonometry proceeds from the circle first! There’s a reason it’s called the “tangent” kids—it’s the slope of the tangent line that touches the unit circle at whatever point bounds the arc you’ve chosen.
Once you get the Pythagorean theorem under your belt, we can explain the basic trig functions to you on the unit circle in a way that makes sense both visually and algebraically (whatever learning style you prefer).
Yet another example where math curricula are apparently designed by people who don’t understand math—historically or otherwise.

I got into computers as a kid because they were fun. It was fun figuring out how things worked and writing silly little programs to paint things on the screen. Communicating with people all over the world using computers and networks only added to the enjoyment.
We are all aware of how governments and corporations are using computer technology for dubious and evil ends. Many of us have been ground down by toxic work environments and late-stage capitalism. Our communications channels are spammed with bad actors.
But it is still possible to find joy in even the simplest hacks. Learn something new that isn't jammed down your throat by your job or some influencer. Write a silly little program to paint things on the screen, or control the lights in your home, or feed your pets. Find a supportive community online, and make plans to meet them offline. Learn, create, socialize, grow.
Don't lose the fun.

Looked up a phone number using my mobile web browser. Clicked the phone number link in the Google search results. My phone called a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT toll-free number where a recording informed me that GOOGLE (not the merchant) would be recording the call “for quality purposes”.

I recently switched back to Linux as my primary desktop after a few years on Windows 10, with some time on MacOS mixed in. Danielle (my beloved Mac user) says, “It looks the same to me.”
I believe this judgement is based on my tendency to cover my screen with terminal windows—black text on white background—regardless of the platform I’m on. As I’ve been doing this for four decades across multiple desktop environments, it seems unlikely that things will change.

My mother’s estate includes this original portrait of Julia Putnam (b. 11/21/1830, d. 11/24/1901). She was the daughter of Colonel Abligence Waldo Putnam and his wife the former Catherine Anne Sevier. Julia was the great granddaughter of John Sevier – the first governor of Tennessee – and the great, great granddaughter of Revolutionary War hero Israel Putnam.
The portrait was important to my mother because she was also descended from these families, howevermuch she was estranged from her own. Rather than having the portrait become just another object in her estate sale, my brother and I are seeking to rehome the portrait to an individual or organization with some relationship to Julia’s history and/or family.

I am writing in concern over reports of Elon Musk and his accomplices exerting control over government information systems. At best, Mr Musk and his team are unauthorized personnel who apparently are installing new email systems and blocking authorized employees from accessing government information systems. At worst, they are saboteurs with agendas that conflict with our laws and institutions.
I have spent the bulk of my 40 year career in information systems protecting US users and networks from intrusions by hostile foreign attackers. I am a recognized expert in my field and have performed computer forensics and incident response work for a diverse set of organizations including the FBI, NASA, the FTC, DoD, Google, Microsoft, Cisco, eBay, and the University of Pennsylvania. I have held TS/SCI clearances with both DoD and DoJ.
So when I say that dropping new email servers into existing networks without proper planning and access control constitutes a clear and present danger to those networks and an enormous opportunity for our adversaries, I want you to understand that this comes from a place of hard-won and bitter understanding. Already there are confirmed reports of entire agencies receiving deluges of pornographic spam and other inappropriate material due to misconfigurations on these new email servers. But it is what other opportunistic nation states are doing out of sight that is more troubling.
I have worked on investigative teams that have led to decades of jail time for offenders who have gained unauthorized access to government information systems. Yet we have corroborated reports that Mr Musk’s team has not only accessed OPM systems without authorization, but actually locked out the authorized personnel. Need I remind you that these systems contain information about all government employees and contractors, including security clearance paperwork, personal financial information, and healthcare and insurance information?
Where is the immediate and aggressive emergency response to this dangerous and unauthorized activity into government information systems? The executive branch does not have the authority to permit any individual to conduct such operations. When Chinese government actors breached OPM in 2015, the reaction was swift and significant. This is as just as much of a hostile takeover, but the posture is one of blasé indifference.
This must not stand. Every hour this activity continues, more information may be captures and exfiltrated by Mr Musk’s agents. Every hour foreign adversaries may be establishing beachheads in government networks. Every hour the scope of potential compromise and the cost of fixing the damage grows exponentially.
The congress must resist the extreme actions of the executive and its minions. Without decisive and immediate pushback, we are lost.

I bought a batch of surplus equipment from the local university and included on the pallet was this piece of computing history from 1997. Yep, that’s a pre-rebrand Gateway 2000 E-3000 Pentium box. It’s got a network card, a modem, and what looks suspiciously like an old SoundBlaster card. And it’s retro beige all over.
I haven’t opened it up yet or tried to power it on, but I’ll follow up in this thread when I get a chance to investigate further.

Automation has eliminated countless jobs. I suspect that there is no longer enough meaningful jobs/work for the entire population. But we tell people who are un(der)employed that they just aren’t trying hard enough.
Unfortunately, the fruits of automation are being hoarded by a few ultra-wealthy individuals who were in the right place at the right time with a big pile of capital. But there’s absolutely no reason that the investments they made should have been taxed at a lower rate than any other form of income.
Tax their assets. Fund the housing, food security, healthcare, and education programs that they should have been funding all along.
All of this automation should be transitioning us into a world of leisure. End the artificial scarcity created by vast concentrations of capital. If we don’t do it via taxation, history shows that it will come via bloody revolution.

Our nine year old cat is no longer using her litter box but instead ruining our furniture. We have tried:
New litter boxes
Pheromone diffusers
Antibiotics to treat UTI
Scanning for bladder stones (negative)

When people hear “storm surge” I think they sometimes picture a wave that they experience at the beach. It might be taller than you, but you swim up and over the face or just punch through. The wave goes by and you’re back standing in waist-high water.
THAT IS NOT WHAT STORM SURGE IS LIKE. When forecasters say “10-15 feet of storm surge” you need to picture the ENTIRE OCEAN being 10-15’ above its normal height. It is coming on land and there is nothing you can do to stop it. And it will rise up hours BEFORE the storm actually arrives and it will PERSIST while the storm grinds over you.
“Hide from the wind. Run from the water.” Do not mess around with the ocean. Get out now.

If you can pick it up, so can the wind. And the wind can throw it a lot harder and a lot farther than you ever could. All loose objects should be cleaned up and stored inside well before the storm approaches.
Put up your storm shutters, barricades, and/or sandbags now, today. Milton will apparently be pushing lots of rain ahead of it and conditions tomorrow may be difficult.
You will lose power. Try to keep your electronics plugged in as much as possible, so that when power does go out you will be fully charged. Make sure all your backup power supplies are fully charged. Test your generator/battery/solar fail over. Generator fuel supply secure?
Filling a bathtub with water is not a bad idea. If water does go out, you have an extra supply for flushing toilets or drinking (after boiling).
How am I going to boil water if the power is out? Too late to get one now, but a propane stove is helpful to have in your hurricane kit (along with a supply of propane). Once it is safe outside, you can boil water and have hot meals.

There is a fundamental disconnect here in the Fediverse. Folks who are not in the “white cis-het men” club are showing up daily with receipts demonstrating ongoing harassment. And many of them have concrete, actionable suggestions for making things better. And they are being ignored or gaslit.
Personally, I want the Fedi to be a safe space for all of these voices. If the current groups working on development are failing in their duty to these communities, then we need a new group of developers charged with implementing towards what is needed. And that will likely take funding.
We need to start listening and centering the concerns of these marginalized groups. And we need to give them the opportunity and resources necessary to take the lead on creating solutions.

We live in Florida, a state which is in the “likely GOP” column. Our daughter attends college in Pennsylvania, which is shaping up to be an important state for Democratic victory in this election. So our daughter has changed her voter registration to PA.

I feel like I’ve been giving this advice a lot lately, so I’m just going to put it on blast.
I’m sorry to say that this is an absolutely terrible time to be looking for work in tech here in the USA. We’ve had a lot of layoffs which flooded the market with job seekers. And employers are all holding their collective breath waiting for the results of the November elections. I’m talking to employers and some are explicitly saying, “No hiring until 2025.”
So it’s not just you. And it’s not an indictment of your skills and what you bring to the table. It’s about the environment you find yourself in right now. I know it feels personal and rejection feels like shit. I see you, I see your worth.
