only way to know what it means to clean a toilet is to clean a fucking toilet. government might not be any different. "the public won't preserve what it has no means of perceiving, understanding, and evaluating" -- maybe a system we can all take a shift in -- participate -- would do that. legislative work as jury duty.

Aging does that. I am not looking forward to it. My grandmother when she was ~ 78 had a health scare and was hospitalized. That went okay. But the rehab she then was forced to inpatient at, with absolutely all context lost: no coffee in morning, no afternoon tea, no husband to help, no right-wing radio as she did chores, no morning news shows, no crossword: she was terrified; a sort of psychosis.
I hope I can always cope with dislocation but I know odds are against me.

Living abroad as a child turned me into a permanent expat no matter where I go. Nothing is "normal" or "default." Everything is contingent. Everything might be threatening or better than you imagine or somehow both. And home is no place.

I was always told that as I got older my views would become more "conservative" but these are also folks who communicated the idea of that "public good" and responsibility to "the commons" as part of public companies. It is frankly shocking, still, that capital abandoned any notion of a public good. Every extant museum and library created by century-ago robber barons shocks me given current corporate standard operating procedure.
