interesting, the info I had came from a Dutch etymology site, and gender sounds so much more natural in English to me that until now, I had zero doubt it came from there.

As a Dutch person that really doesn't hear Dutch much anymore, it's very grating than to hear Dutch people say the assimilated word "gender", as they distinguish it from the native English word by pronouncing it with the hard Dutch "g", and it just sounds... wrong...
This of course happened after I left NL, maybe if I was still there I'd be used to it by now, but still, I wish they used a Dutch word for it.

Can someone with some #etymology knowledge confirm/deny of the English "cheers" and the German "tschüß" are related.
I've been saying cheers as a going away greeting for a long time, and I noticed that if said fast enough it sounds quite similar to tschüß.

Just a reminder that the extreme right is using toxic masculinity as a way to recruit young men.
While we can easily blame men for being toxic, I don't think it will fix much. We need to create a narrative that speaks to men that feel lost. One that's different than all the toxic shit that's so effective on these guys right now.
There's legions of young men feeling left behind by society, and we need to make sure they don't feel that way before things get ugly.
