ah wonderful. so I made a time machine backup of my macbook pro on a 256GB NVMe SSD I had kicking around but now I want to move that on to my 2TB external SSD I keep all of my portable data on
except macOS refuses to let me copy the backups off. great. so what happens if this drive starts going bad then?
this kind of shit is what drives me up the fucking wall with apple. the only feedback I get is a 🚫 or a beep noise and that's it. apple dumbing things down so hard that it wraps back around and becomes completely obtuse.

sitting here seriously thinking whether I should have my timing belt done on my fiesta
I have no service history and I have no idea if the belt was ever done on it.
It's beyond the age lifespan and the mileage lifespan to have it replaced. The car is 14 years old and 120K on the clock, it should be replaced at ~6 years or 100K.
Yeah it's a £1200 shitbox but it drives well and if I can make it last the distance, the longer it lasts the more time I have to save up for a better car in the future.

I got to the point where I was like "okay fine just let the BlueSCSI flash away and see what happens" and the thing just went "boop" a minute or so later
That, the floppy drive trying to read and spitting non bootable disks out, responding to Apple+CTRL+Power to reset, and the little pop noises from the speaker after the chime indicated to me that it WAS working in some capacity but it just had a display out issue, especially seeing as it was booting up in 640x350???
I changed the adapter from "VGA 640x480" to '13" RGB 640x480@66Hz' and the bastard worked first try lol

I've had to down tools on the LC II because I needed to head to work.
But here's what I've got so far.
PSU now works.
Took a lot of effort to get a picture out of it but it now **chimes** to a grey screen.
I once got a floppy disk question mark icon out of it, but it was garbled.
If I attach an internal BlueSCSI, the access light blinks as if there's activity.
Sometimes performing a PRAM reset works - it reboots with a chime. Sometimes it doesn't and ignores me.
Once or twice I've had it power on with a black screen and no chime.
I get a grey screen with a chime with no RAM, and with just the extra VRAM installed. So that's not an issue.
The motherboard has been fully recapped by the person I bought it off of a year ago with tantalums. I have recapped the PSU today.
I don't get it. There just seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why it won't start up correctly. No obvious hints to say "it's definitely x" or "could be xyz".
I'm stumped. And ngl, kinda losing my patience lol

Now it's booting to a grey screen and won't proceed. Even with a BlueSCSI in the external port.

It's a mixed bag - I've seen some say they don't need it, some say they do. I'll grab some anyway. I've also found a HD15-VGA adapter on Amazon that doesn't need configuring to get 640x480 out of it which would be very ideal so I'll kill two birds with one stone :P

Good news: power supply has been recapped and the system now turns on and chimes!
Bad news: Only with the extra RAM out and it won't display anything...

My parents already pay for a Spotify subscription so I'd be stupid not to use it. With Spotify I can just tap a song, then tap on its radio and get new songs in an instant that I can then go off and purchase. I can use that to explore the artists's entire discography in the same app I'm using to listen to it.
Plus the fact I don't really want to be searching up tracks and torrenting them just to be able to listen to new music whilst I'm cycling to/from work.
I know about torrenting - my parents and I have done it since the Limewire days when we were less well off. I tend not to do that now unless what I'm after is not purchaseable anymore. The thing is, torrenting feels like it would defeat the purpose of buying - why would I torrent it for free, then *buy* the same files again? Sure, I could donate, but it feels more right to just buy their music from the source.
If artists are still putting their music on streaming sites then the least I can do is discover their music and buy it.
My dad has discovered artists through Spotify on his drive to/from work and have been to their gigs. He wouldn't have done that otherwise.

hot 2am takes:
streaming services are a net positive overall. the fact is, I have found so many artists through spotify i would never have known about otherwise. and i have bought some of their albums that I *really like* when possible!
i found out about battle tapes through youtube and spotify and they're one of my favourite bands, if not my most favourite now. and I recently bought their album on CD when they re-released it! i would honestly sell my liver for a vinyl release but i doubt that'll happen
....*quickly checks to make sure they haven't done that yet*...alas they have not
i think that streaming music *whilst supporting artists by buying physical releases* (or digital if they've only got that) is a good way of going about it. find the bands you like through streaming, and then support them by buying their music!
it's a win-win all around, right?

and 4.5TB is a fair whack considering I'm using 6.21TB (nice) on my file server and that's got music going back 25 years, 2TB worth of movies, ISO backups, etc

i'm not saying fedi is perfect, nor am i bashing bluesky - i like both - it's just funny
bluesky is effectively centralised until people start making their own PDSes or whatever anyway
(and I know that others have different reasons as to why they won't join fedi, and I can respect that!)
