Super heavy elements like Uranium loooove neutrons. U has 92 protons, but we usually talk about U-235 and U-238, that number (the rough atomic weight or mass) is the total number of protons AND neutrons. That's a ton of neutrons!
This makes sense for these very large nuclei. The residual strong force holds the neutrons and protons together, but the electric charge of alllll those protons wants to break the nucleus apart. So the neutrons not only spread the protons out a bit, but add more of that strong force to hold the big guy together.

So @npub1x5e…5sp7 asked me what the coolest isotope is yesterday, and the answer is Calcium-48.
Calcium, famous from it's role in milk, is the element with 20 protons. Most of it that we find on earth has an equal number of neutrons, rounding out the total weight to 40.
Calcium-48 is a really interesting outlier though, and has enabled some super cool science! Let's learn about what makes Calcium-48 DOUBLY-MAGIC. 🎩 💫

I'm not a geopolitical expert by any means, but I imagine in their position (barring any secret enrichment facilities) if they wanted to keep the international community in the dark about the location of the material, their best bet would be to smuggle it to another country (Russia?)

enrichment is a huge slow process. Remember that Uranium-235 is only 0.73% of natural uranium. That means for every 1000 atoms of uranium 7 are U-235. That's a tiny fraction. Enrichment generates a TON of depleted uranium.
Starting from a much higher percentage is MUCH faster to get to 90% or so, but it takes exponentially longer for every percent.

Generally thousands of centrifuges are connected. In this case they would probably want a few hundred in a cascade, and it would probably take on the scale of days to enrich it to ~90%.
A single centrifuge isn't very useful, they are best used with many in a line. Remember, they are trying to separate two isotopes by a difference of the mass of 3 neutrons, that's a very precise and slow process unless you're doing it in bulk.
It requires a lot of specific materials and a ton of energy to do. So that makes building and maintaining secret enrichment facilities challenging.
Distributed would be incredibly slow and not worthwhile, you'd be spending more time moving the material than enriching it, especially given the number of stages you'd want to do it quickly.

Like I thought, we are seeing a lot of articles about Iran’s “missing” 400 kg of HEU. A reminder that according to the IAEA they verified it just prior to the bombs starting to drop, so they knew where it was and that it wasn’t being weaponized.
We don’t know where Iran has it now or what they are doing with it ONLY because Israel and the US started bombing the site where they stored it (Isfahan).

In the next weeks I anticipate we will hear a lot about Iran's ~400 kg of 60% enriched uranium, which they will probably refer to using the more scary phrase "Highly Enriched Uranium" or HEU.
They will talk about how it is "out of control," which means the IAEA doesn't have tracking of it.
This COULD be enriched to weapons-grade, and used for a bomb, IF they have an enrichment facility to do it in. That's a very very VERY big if. There's a very high chance their only three facilities were just destroyed.
I think the odds of having a secret facility outside the knowledge of the international community is low. Not only are they hard to hide, but they're almost impossible to build without raising flags. As it turns out, a lot of centrifuges require very specialized equipment and parts. You can't build a nuclear facility in secret very easily.
This is RIPE for fear mongering. I'm not a non-proliferation expert but I'll do my best to keep folks informed, as well as boost any voices or sources I find on the matter. As always happy to field questions.

The Natanz site was already attacked by Israel in the past few days. It is also a uranium enrichment facility and the damage apparently destroyed much of the above ground structures, and some of the underground.
The IAEA already reported that radiation levels outside the facility were normal; but that there was significant radiological and chemical contamination inside. As with the Fodrow site, most of this is uranium fluoride and other chemicals mixed with fluorine.
Again, the heavier gases are fairly non-mobile, but it's unclear what a follow-on strike will do.

We won't know the extent of the damage or aftermath for some time I imagine. But as far as the Fordow site is concerned, it is a uranium enrichment facility.
The IAEA found evidence of highly enrichment uranium at the site, but a majority of the uranium stored is probably in the uranium hexafloride (UF6) form.
UF6 is a heavy uranium gas that is used in centrifuges. The heaviness of the gas means that if there was a release, it likely would only have localized impacts.

I have hope, however small, that things like this Ted Cruz/Tucker interview are forcing the right to come to terms with their own bullshit.
I think it's pretty clear when Ted goes "You don't know what Israel is?" which is a disingenuous question, obviously, but is so in the same way as "You don't know what a woman is?"
Suddenly, you see Tucker dumbfounded in the same way so many of us are by that tactic. Which always leads to the implication they have a monopoly on some kind of "common sense" that we are divorced from.
