AFAIK on iOS there’s no on-device way to search or view the contents any of the internal system databases without jailbreaking (which has become increasingly difficult to do), but there are digital forensics tools (both commercial & open source) that can enumerate them – this is the sort of tool that the FBI used

Signal’s database #encryption wasn’t the problem in this instance, it was the amount of detail in the content of push notifications (and it’s persistence) in the iOS APN database
choosing to use a #Signal fork like #Molly instead of the official client brings its own set of risks and trade-offs to be weighed in the context of your specific threat model

2026-04-16 03:30:02 UTC

y’all have your #Signal notifications set to “Name Only” or “No Name or Content”, right…? 🤔
**FBI Extracts Suspect’s Deleted Signal Messages Saved in iPhone Notification Database**
*“The #FBI was able to forensically extract copies of incoming Signal messages from a defendant’s #iPhone, even after the app was deleted, because copies of the content were saved in the device’s push notification database”*

*”A few days ago, 404 Media published a detailed report that made a lot of people uncomfortable: the FBI managed to recover Signal messages from a suspect’s iPhone, even though the app had already been uninstalled.* ***No #encryption was broken. hi frens 👋 does anyone in #Melbourne have any contacts who might be interested in #metalworking gear for cheap or free? I’m disposing of my dad’s estate & trying to find good homes for a garage full of equipment, tools, & some scrap metal – including drill presses, a lathe, welders, oxy tanks, etc.…
I’d much rather they go to folks who could make good use of them than have them sold off to a metal scrapper or end up in landfill
if you’re interested or have any leads on someone who might be, pls DM me
ETA: I’ve already contacted quite a few men’s sheds & men’s shed networks in Victoria & the few that I was able to get a response from weren’t able to take anything due to space or focus constraints 😕
pls #boost4reach

hi #FediNerds 👋 does anyone need / want a very-lightly-used 4U 300mm deep network cabinet? I’ve migrated my modest stack of gear to a new 12U one so this one’s STR & #free to a good home
details here -> https://dataworld.com.au/product/4ru-300mm-deep-wall-mount-cabinet/
it’s available for pickup in #Canberra or I’m happy to ship it elsewhere in #Aus if you think it’s worth it & will cover shipping costs 💁‍♀️

2026-02-05 04:42:41 UTC

I missed this transcript of a 🔥🔥🔥 talk by @npub1fdr…lvhs when it came out in early December, it’s well worth a read
**The #ReverseCentaur’s Guide to Criticizing #AI**
*”Over the summer I wrote a book about what I think about AI, which is really about what I think about AI criticism, and more specifically, how to be a good AI critic. By which I mean: "How to be a critic whose criticism inflicts maximum damage on the parts of AI that are doing the most harm." I titled the book* The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI, *and Farrar, Straus and Giroux will publish it in June, 2026.”*
*”Start with what a reverse centaur is. In #AutomationTheory, a "centaur" is a person who is assisted by a machine. You're a human head being carried around on a tireless robot body. Driving a car makes you a centaur, and so does using autocomplete.*
*And obviously, a reverse centaur is a machine head on a human body, a person who is serving as a squishy meat appendage for an uncaring machine.”*
.
.
.
*”To pop the [AI] bubble, we have to hammer on the forces that created the bubble: the myth that AI can do your job, especially if you get high wages that your boss can claw back; the understanding that growth companies* need *a succession of ever-more-outlandish bubbles to stay alive; the fact that workers and the public they serve are on one side of this fight, and bosses and their investors are on the other side.”*

OK #FediFriends, time for more #recs pls for #Linux-y stuff… 🙏 (I’m temporarily ruling out #FreeBSD, soz #Beastie fans 👿)
**what file manager do you like / prefer / use?**
I’m very not-happy with #Nautilus (a.k.a. “Files” 🙄) – I swear it used to be good maybe a decade or two ago but now it feels like a babby’s first file manger with minimal configuration options 😤 (am I thinking of a different old file manger? possibly…? 🤔)
I’ve been toying around with different distros in VMs & find #Dolphin OK enough that I’ve installed it on my actual current-but-soon-to-be-ex #PopOS† install, but it’s from #KDE-land so doesn’t understand #GNOME light / dark mode & consistently blinds me… 🕶️
I’m enjoying #Debian 13 KDE atm, & it seems like it will probably support the old (beast) laptop I’m using for all things Linux
I think I found #Thunar OK when I was playing with an #XFCE install on something recently but really need to revisit it & I’m not sure that it’ll integrate well if I end up running KDE #Wayland rather than… well, XFCE 🤪 (or anything else GNOME-y)
so frens… **what do y’all recommend?** 👀

OK, and now you have enough information to make a risk-informed decision based on your threat model & risk tolerance 💁‍♀️
if conferences can’t control the HVAC of their venues (and they rarely can), providing attendees & potential attendees real-time (proxy) info about risk levels & offering livestreams is an excellent risk management strategy

today’s “tales from the #enshitocene”… 😩
we’re at a rental property for our honeymoon! 🎉🎉🎉 👰‍♀️👰‍♀️🐶 🚣‍♀️🐶🚣‍♀️ (that’s not the #enshittified part 🤪)
the house has a “smart” (🙄) TV – so far I’ve removed 3 previous still-logged-in Google account profiles, disabled analytics & “data sharing” in three different places, turned off all the Google / Alexa integration bullshit (especially the microphone wake word!), etc., etc. 😩
but at least one profile is still “remembered” somewhere in the settings, since if you open the “set up Google assistant” page (to make sure everything’s turned off), it “helpfully” pre-fills the account box with the email of one of the (obviously-not-really-)deleted accounts
(I’ll probably email that person & let them know that I’ve logged out of their account for them & suggest that maybe they should do that themselves next time they log in to their account on some rando’s TV… 🤪)
and of course, despite us def never logging in to any apps on some rando’s TV & only running stuff on our own laptops connected via HDMI, we still run the risk of the TV snitching on us via totally undisclosed & in-opt-outable #AutomatedContentRecognition (#ACR) tech – this particular TV is a #TCL one, one of the brands named in a new #lawsuit in… ✷checks notes✷ …#Texas (😳 but also 🎉)

living with #iOS26 continues to reveal new #shitUI / #shitUX “features” 😡🤬
the #Safari toolbar now has enormous text & button elements^ that have presumably led to the decision to remove the tabs button / icon & relegating to a pop-up menu – so now viewing open tabs requires two taps instead of one, & switching to a different tab now requires three taps instead of two… 🤦‍♀️
these are the alleged “design geniuses” of #Apple at work, folks 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
^ I have old eyes, so I tend to run most app text size at 120% – but I’ve checked the toolbar layout at other text sizes all the way down to 80% & it doesn’t change the elements presented, so the tabs button / icon doesn’t disappear ’coz I’m running larger text sizes, it’s just a crap design decision 💁‍♀️

welp, #Menulog is shutting down in #Australia with only 2 weeks’ notice – so if you have any vouchers or credits **use ’em or lose ’em by Wednesday 26th November**
there’s no prominent announcement about this on the Australian Menulog home page – or on their website at all – which you would think should be the bare minimum, hey? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
but if you go digging through their “Newsroom” section you eventually find an article on the US site of Just Eat Takeaway.com, which presumably owns Menulog:
**Just Eat Takeaway.com ceases operations in Australia**
https://newsroom.justeattakeaway.com/en-WW/257572-just-eat-takeaway-com-ceases-operations-in-australia/
and that article includes a link at the end asking you to “visit our Australian newsroom for more information” (as you’d imagine, there’s not actually much more information – and also, shouldn’t the “Newsroom” link on your Australian site link to the Australian version of your “Newsroom“ in the first place…? 🤪 🤡🤡🤡)
**Just Eat Takeaway.com ceases operations in Australia**
https://newsroom.justeattakeaway.com/en-AU/257574-just-eat-takeaway-com-ceases-operations-in-australia/
anyway, full text from the customer email sent out this morning is below:
**Menulog to close in Australia**
Dear XXXXX,
Unfortunately, today we announced Menulog will no longer operate in Australia, from **midnight Wednesday 26 November 2025**.
As the only Australian-born platform, Menulog has a proud history but ultimately, as a business we have been navigating challenging circumstances and the decision was made to close local operations.
Please be advised that our website and app will remain operational until **23:59 AEDT Wednesday 26 November**, but will not be accepting orders after this date.
**Unused vouchers and credits**
Menulog will honour any unused account credits or vouchers over the next two weeks. If you have any questions about using your voucher or account credit, our team is here to help - just reach out to us anytime.
Finally, we would like to sincerely thank you for your support over almost 20 years.
Kind regards,
**Menulog Team**

#Vale Wes Smith ❤️‍🩹
my 90 year-old dad died last night after a very long life, a long decline, multiple hospitalisations, and the last couple of months spent in hospital & a repat facility
lots of complex feelings for me, but I’m glad he no longer needs to struggle in difficult circumstances (largely of his own creation, but still ❤️‍🩹)
when he was young, he travelled the world in the Merchant Navy in the loud, hot bellies of large cargo ships amongst the enormous engines with pistons several times taller than himself. he only spent a short time in each port – a tasting menu, you might say – but he felt that he had seen the entire world by the time he got married
he worked many jobs in his long career, most of them spent bending metal to his will, often shaping machines into new forms to perform tasks for which they were never originally designed. he worked long hours to provide financially for his family – which he saw as his main duty in life – but also because he loved working with machines & solving engineering problems born of metal. grease. electricity.
he was a fitter & turner, a boiler-maker, a repairer & maintainer, a “keeper-runnerer”, a tinkerer. he used tools to design & make other tools to make machines. I’m sure that some of my own interests & skills were influenced by growing up watching him execute his craft, hearing him talk about his work, & being dragged along to yet another industrial robot exhibition 😩😜
he was a life-long learner, and my own love of 🤔 – or at least facility with – computers & electronics & code (oh my!) were things he saw (and understood) and supported. in the late 1970s or very early 1980s he took a programming course (which was the spelling at the time 😜) at the local TAFE, and he took me along – a rare opportunity in that era. my first hands-on experience with code at 11 or 12 years old was in the form of mapping out & writing programmes down by hand on graph paper & then encoding them on a stack of mark sense cards with a B2 pencil to be fed into a card reader (and drawing that all-important diagonal line down the side of the stack with said pencil – #IYKYK 😆)
it wasn’t long until I had begged sufficiently & got my very first computer (that we absolutely couldn’t really afford), a #CoCo – the original #TRS80 #ColorComputer model in “battleship grey” with 16K RAM 😲, later upgraded to a whopping 64K 🤯 🤯
I still have that computer over 40 years later 😊
after he retired, he always had several ambitious plans on the boil (less charitable folks might call them “hare-brained schemes” 🙃), including a petrol-powered all-terrain tracked wheelchair for a friend who wanted to be able to travel off the beaten path under his own (metaphorical) steam. it would have ended up weighing about a tonne & absolutely would never have worked (safely), but he was determined to “help” a friend & excited to work on solving an interesting engineering challenge, once again bending metal and machinery to his purpose *du jour*
he was happiest noodling in his workshop, oil- & grease-stained hands deep inside a machine, wielding – or welding – a new tool of his own design. I always associated the smell of machines and ozone with his presence. until after he retired I never saw his hands unstained by years of ingrained, immovable grease
in his later years he discovered #3Dprinting and became a journeyman #maker of sorts. he was exceptionally proud (and a bit obnoxious) when he was able to “teach the professionals at #U3A a thing or two” about his new hobby. his idea of a conversation had always been (impatiently) waiting for you to take a breath so he could tell you the next thing he was interested in – usually unconnected to whatever you’d shared 💁‍♀️
he used a succession of smallish 3D printers to make many, many Japanese-inspired lanterns (into which he stuffed various strings of coloured flashing lights) and Chinese-inspired dragons, amazed & delighted that additive manufacturing was able to create interlocking objects right off the print bed – after having spent a lifetime creating sometimes-intricate interlocking components using tried-and-true subtractive manufacturing processes. he gave most of these prints away to others – whether they wanted them or not 😆
he was a fitter & turner, a boiler-maker, a repairer & maintainer, a “keeper-runnerer”, a tinkerer
and he was my father

well since you mention it… I also made these stickers 🙃
the switch & the stickers (& a life-size standee of Margaret Hamilton & a DSKY) were for a display on the Apollo Guidance Computer that I put together for a recent vintage computer fair here in Canberra 💁‍♀️

I made this slide in my talk at Everything Open in January mostly ‘coz it amused me but also ‘coz we sometimes have young folk in the audience… 💁‍♀️
(yes, I read it out as “en-poop-ocene”, “en-poop-ening”, etc. 🙃)

do you mean people seeing arseholes being arseholes and ascribing them some kind of super-genius status to handwave it away instead of just acknowledging that they’re arseholes?

sure, abuse of power is SOP for these chucklefucks – but look how small-minded & petty their grift can be…
…and imagine working to become a secret service agent on presidential or vice-presidential detail & then you end up being obligated to take a bullet for these chuds 🤪

welp, I’m not gonna get any accelerometer data because… *checks notes* he wasn’t wearing the alert button 🤦‍♀️
the fall happened inside the house
*“I wasn’t wearing it because I don’t need it inside the house…”*
**counterpoint:** /me gestures wildly at current events 🫠
**professional takeaway:** the risk management tools you bought only work when you turn them on 🤪
(this is not a revelation to me, ofc.)

I’m visiting #MEL for a few days for my dad’s 90th (‼️) birthday… 🎉
…and got a call from one of his friends this morning before I left for the airport that he’d had a(nother) fall 😕
he’s now in the hospital ER with that friend, waiting for some scans to be done. I’m heading there as soon as I get checked in to my hotel. will likely be there a while, but at least I can take him home afterwards (assuming they don’t admit him overnight for obs)
his alert button / fall detector didn’t trigger, so he may have fell progressively rather than a hard fall, which is perhaps encouraging, but still 😕 so I’m gonna need to do a refresher with him to remind him that he can push the button manually to send an alert and / or call me or another emergency contact rather than having to get himself to his phone
I’ll also see if I can pull accelerometer data from the alert button (I’m not holding my breath on that) to see if I can identify why the alert didn’t trigger – I’m guessing that it was below the preset threshold, but would be good to confirm / disprove 🫠

yeah there are quite a few minor grinches I’m bumping up against in the Ice Cubes UX, which is why I’m looking at Ivory again. but I haven’t found anything in Ivory so far that is anything other than… ‘competent’ 😬

friends 🧸 pls send me your #recs for #mastodon clients on #iOS - I use & love the Toot! app 💕 for it’s style & #whimsy (gotta have some whimsy!) but it hasn’t been updated in a year, has a few UX grinches, & is missing support for some newer features. I’m on a #GlitchSoc instance so I’m especially keen to hear from those on similar instances 🤜💥🤛‬
I’d prefer something that doesn’t feel like the same old boring 🐦 :birdsite: apps, something that reflects the unique character, norms, & workflows of this place if possible 🤞
thx 🙏 & pls boost for reach!

hi friends in #ACT (#Australia)👋 please take a few minutes to fill in this ACT Gov survey about setting minimum standards for rental properties 🖊️
to me it’s a no-brainer that safe, secure, & comfortable housing is a human right & that governments should be ensuring that landlords provide basic facilities like hot & cold running water (🤯), mould-free houses (🤯🤯), and properties that actually meet basic standards for insulation (🤯🤯🤯) & energy efficiency
if you agree, please let ACT Gov know
please copypasta to share on your timeline & other socials
thank you! 💕

🌈 hi again friends 👋 time to like, boost, & share on all your socials to support proper recognition of #queer folk as part of the Australian population 🏳️‍🌈
(yes, I agree that giving such info to the #government can be problematic - but we should have a way to be counted if we choose to share)
Our national #Census should count every one of us, properly. But we still don’t know how many #LGBTIQ+ people there are in #Australia. Join the campaign, calling on the #ABS and Albanese Government to #CountUsIn2026?
