the inventor of PCR even says that it's not a test for diagnosing anything. i believe he originally conceived it as a way to recover DNA from fossils and miniscule traces of biological material. it's not meant to be used for anything quantitative. the indicator markers indicating detection don't have any meaning for actual viral load. you can just have had a tiny, miniscule amount of it contact you that won't survive contact with your immune system.
