I bought a Thunderbolt cable (after first accidentally buying a Thunderbolt 2 cable b/c the website wasn't super clear) and everything is working now but since this whole thing happened b/c of an OS update error, I'm just beyond annoyed that I have to do this to ensure my mom won't lose her data. She was all in favor of just taking it to the Apple Store but I do not trust those people to be able to actually do a data backup before doing an OS reinstall.
