I think the rumors of an A18-based MacBook are exciting, especially if you can slot in at that $650 price point. My only concern is how much Apple neuters it. @nprofile…wr03 rightfully points out the USB-C thing is one area (which I think is fine), my broader concern is RAM. I don’t think 8GB is sufficient for macOS, full stop. And that’s before you add Apple Intelligence. I don’t care if it’s $650, no Mac sold today should have under 16GB of RAM. @nprofile…66kr I think the interesting thing here is a) BenQ will likely sell this for less than $1299 on sale too, so if you get in the $1000 range, that’s still compelling for a TB display. And B) many of us would like to use our monitor with a non-Mac source. This can do it. I think I’ll wait for the 6K Asus to compare & I think the $800 non-TB Asus might be a better value if you’re not doing Studio Display, but as someone who wants another 5K but refuses to buy another SD before the refresh, I get it

I’m actually serious when I say the I only itch I’ve had to own a Vision Pro is for the Eras Tour on Disney+. I’m still not buying it because I had to spend $500 on copies of The Tortured Poets Department vinyls and tapes (look, I’m not a sane person or good with money, we know this) and that’s enough for now, but I bet it fucks on Vision Pro.

Instead, position it as a dev kit (even if you let anyone buy it) until you can get supply correct. I don’t buy this idea that they fumbled the launch on purpose.

@npub1mkd…hqdh I just don’t think we can use situations from 40 years ago today the same way. The industry isn’t the same and the expectations aren’t either. Again, this is a dev kit that is being marketed as a consumer device. And the Mac had Mac Paint at launch. Even Apple hasn’t shown off any killer apps in their own videos. That’s my whole point. Apple sold the Macintosh in 1984. They haven’t even come close to selling me in 2024 on Vision Pro.

This is the exact problem. Me, the girl who will buy any stupid-as-fuck gadget & who will also buy a super pricey laptop b/c of the color (and considered replacing her $1800 chair with an identical model in a different color — sanity prevailed there) said “nah fam, I’m good” on the Vision Pro. This is a very clear sales and marketing failure because even the smallest amount of effort would have me buying this. And yet my FOMO is oddly nonexistent

I genuinely hope everyone who gets a Vision Pro loves it. I hope my initial misgivings about it are wrong and that a use case presents itself immediately. But I dunno man. It’s like I said the other week: this is a dev kit that is being positioned as a consumer gadget and I just haven’t been “sold” yet.
I love nothing more than to spend money on useless shit, but I need to be sold. And so far, I haven’t been sold.

@npub1x8s…lwsj I’m a geek for the home theater stuff too, but without trying it, I have concerns. First, how hard will it be to use with my ripped content - I assume not hard but I don’t know if Plex or VLC or whatever will work. Second, is it going to drive me nuts after 30 minutes. Third, how annoying will it be to use tethered on the couch/bed/office chair. I hope you love it and I look forward to testing it, but it’s a pass for me for now.

This is the first time since probably 2008 (for iPod touch 2nd gen, the good one) that I haven’t been a day one new Apple device person but you know what, I’m fine waiting. It isn’t even the money. I could buy it with cash no problem. But it’s the principle of not having a way to test it in advance and no clear use case that has me concerned. A friend did get one and I’ll try hers out on the 2nd and I might have FOMO, but like, I gotta be honest, I haven’t been sold on it yet.

No, I did not pre-order a Vision Pro. It’s $3899 for the 1TB option, $500 for Apple Care+, then there is 10% tax. So if I don’t get any accessories like a case or battery clip, I’m at $4848 just for the headset. And I haven’t even tried it yet. No thank you. I might have FOMO, but I’m not into throwing that much money towards the unknown.

@npub1qq8…xl3m so in 2004, when the Linux kernel was forced to move off of its proprietary VCS for ~reasons~ Linus Torvalds basically said, “fuck it” and wrote his own replacement. At the same time, another person came up with Mercurial to solve the same problem. Git launched first and its association with the kernel obviously made it the winner. But some of us preferred the UX of Mercurial.

What's super great about the Target Disk Mode change is that the fucking screen for TDM still has a USB logo on it. Even though you have to use Thunderbolt. If you're going to make this change, at least change how it looks on that screen.

I bought a Thunderbolt cable (after first accidentally buying a Thunderbolt 2 cable b/c the website wasn't super clear) and everything is working now but since this whole thing happened b/c of an OS update error, I'm just beyond annoyed that I have to do this to ensure my mom won't lose her data. She was all in favor of just taking it to the Apple Store but I do not trust those people to be able to actually do a data backup before doing an OS reinstall.

It's so fucking cool that Apple changed how Target Disk Mode works with macOS 11 in that it requires that you use a Thunderbolt cable, even though the target device (a 2018 MacBook Air Retina) comes with a USB-C cable and even though you used to be able to do this over USB-C. Great that they bury this in the fucking docs too. Because you know, we ALL travel with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cables with us when going home for the holidays.

I think if I’d been able to get in that first wave I’d have been there but I first saw the sold out sign, ordered a standard 1TB then rechecked a few minutes later based on friend info and then canceled and placed a new order so I ended up getting in at 57 minutes into launch. So I’m doing something insane to save $500 on a new MacBook Pro 14” b/c of Seattle sales tax. I’m taking the train to fucking Portland. Because it’s $70 on the nice train plus maybe $20 in Ubers vs $552 in extra tax.
