Do you like Korn? I had friends getting into them at the time, and I thought the music was interesting, but I just couldn't get into the lyrical focus. Nu-metal to me (to be real nu-metal) was kind of whiny self-analysis.
Like, for example, I do not consider System of a Down or Static-X to be nu-metal.
Also, there are other bands pre-Korn who had self-therapy and kind of whiny topics, who I have in my collection... NIN and Life of Agony.
