Yesterday, I witnessed NYC’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, take his oath on the Holy Qur’an. As an American Muslim, the joy & reverence I felt watching the moment is hard to describe.
This is what makes America great. Unity without sameness.
Predictably, online outrage followed over a Muslim public servant swearing an oath on his own sacred text. Those reactions reveal a misunderstanding of Islam & what American pluralism actually means.
