Clearly also "man" here is probably not well translated for modern english, and means "mankind" or "humans" plural because it uses the plural pronoun at the end of the sentence, "them".
I am only quoting that one verse but the entire first chapter is the context and that chapter is the entire story of creation of the universe, but focused on our planet.
Just to be clear, the first chapter of the Bible clearly permits the notion of plenty of time prior to the arrival of Adam in Eden, and plenty of humans to exist other than Adam and Eve...
