Legibility is such an underrated aspect of videogame visuals.
People always talk about aesthetics, fidelity, style. And those are important, but I feel that ultimately they fade to the background as you're playing the game for longer.
After playing a game for dozens of hours or more, it's rare to still be dazzled by the visuals. At that point the graphics become more functional. If it's still hard to make out what's what that deep into the game, it's not going to be a great experience.
