Swedes may wonder why I use the word hamlet for Sw. by.
It's because a pre-industrial English village had a church, a village green and a number of farmsteads in the two figures. Sweden had extremely few examples of anything similar. Most of our hamlets had only two farmsteads in the 1640s.
