I find your friend's take silly. "Programmed" doesn't mean music magically generates when a guy pushes a button. How did it get there? Someone did that. Humans have been making music in any way possible for tens of thousands of years. Is it still music if it's collaborative? If you don't have a music theory education? How about if you use a toy piano from 1987? The answer is always yes. (unless it's AI - there's my bias/ethical standard.)
