I’m trying to sort something out in my head. I used to have a friend back in the day who insisted that electronic music like Nine Inch Nails wasn’t really music because “it’s all programmed and all the guy does is stand there and push a button.” I didn’t agree, but it was hard to articulate why. It’s now commonplace for musicians to make whole songs out of samples they didn’t create themselves. How is that OK?
