you do need a certain kind of narrative voice to pull this off, though. George Eliot can editorialize to her heart's content; so can the Bronte sisters. John Steinbeck, less so. if you've committed to the narrator's invisibility, you're forfeiting the ability to inject explicit opinions without knocking people out of the story.
