terra (trans as in transgressive) on Nostr: my paternal grandmother passed on some traditions, but i don't know if she got them ...

my paternal grandmother passed on some traditions, but i don't know if she got them from life in rural Manitoba or passed on from her family or something else. a stranger i have never met has created a genealogy of that side of my family that allows me to look back on it. as a queer neurodivergent trans woman, there are many strange experiences and thoughts that run through my mind: how many of these people were assigned a life they didn't want to lead and what was the impact of that on us all.

my grandmother says we are Ukranian but the family tree tells another story. also, my grandmother and grandfather were 3rd cousins. both of their families emigrated from some small place in what is now Austria to Manitoba Canada. farmers brought in to colonize the land and prepare it for elites.

i met my great grandfather once. he lived to be 102. he told me about how he casually collected indigenous artifacts from his fields and kept them in a tackle box and i find myself wondering now what ever happened to those when he passed. were these pieces of heritage ever returned by this farmer turned colonizer? a terra forming moment.
