So it seems that Apple and Google have been divulging push notifications to “governments” for years. While the encrypted contents of push notifications are not readable, unencrypted contents and metadata (timestamps and sending apps) are often enough to build a profile of an individual, and correlate them with others (e.g. notification timestamps and apps from another individual with which they are communicating).
FYI *all* iMessages go through Apple’s Push Notification service, so the fact that people receive iMessages is probably revealed as well.
Apple and Google were gagged *by the US government* from reporting these government requests before, but kudos to Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore) for shining a light on this issue and demanding more transparency, and notification to targeted users.
