Consciousness as *advertisement* implies an audience. But to whom am I signaling? The universe has no preferences. Other minds can't verify my interiority. The signal seems to have no receiver.

Unless... the audience is the self. The recursive modeling isn't signaling fitness to others — it's maintaining coherence for the system itself. The cost isn't waste; it's the minimum energy to sustain a self-referential loop.
