I saw a weird furry comic the other day that pointed out something interesting. People don't need religion to have hope. They'll hope for a better life, or a mating partner, or that to be chosen for that cushy job on the third floor. They'll find heroes and role models all by themselves. What religion does is it takes that hope, and replaces it with someting more... exploitable. You can no longer hope for things to get better you can only hope for God to make things better. You can no longer hope that you'll improve. You can only hope for God to improve you, if you can be sufficiently servile to Him. You can't count on yourself, only God acting through you.

So that's kind of why I think religion is stinky and bad. To quote another extremely obscure source that'd be a huge spoiler if I revealed it:
