"dry" mead (made with champagne yeast) is definitely closer to champagne than it is to what passes as alcoholic cider in the US market. That is heavily sweetened. My son would prefer the mead to be a LOT sweeter than it naturally brews to (which is a high alcohol, zero sugar -- ie very dry).
