Enlightenment thinking led to "liberalism" - the idea that individuals do have intrinsic value and have the capability to rise to just about any occasion. This was held in contrast to the increasingly enfeebled royal families of Europe, suffering from generations of inbreeding for "blood purity" and stale, stagnant ideas that were undoing any good organized society may have created.
Keep in mind: All of Europe was basically ruled by one family. They all intermarried with one another.
