🇬🇧 Slow travel in Italy isn't an abstract philosophy; it's a logistical choice.
A few days ago, I decided to leave the car behind and board a Fondazione FS historical train: 1930s "Centoporte" wooden carriages, windows you open by hand, and a speed that forces you to take in the Friulian foothills landscape instead of staring at a screen.
My destinations were tiny stone villages like Poffabro and Toppo. No mass tourism crowds, just the sound of footsteps on cobblestones and the smell of Frico (the traditional cheese and potato dish) wafting from the few open taverns. In these places, you walk into a craft shop and still find people working wood by hand, happy to explain their trade without rushing.
Another incredible stop for this type of travel is Orta San Giulio (in Piedmont), a lakeside village easily accessible by regional train. Cars aren't allowed inside: there are only narrow alleys, historic grocery shops filled with alpine cheeses, and the silence of the San Giulio Island right in front.
