Here's a fun observation you can make on your own. All you need is a child's plastic transparent protractor, the kind that's usually held flat on a piece of paper to draw or measure angles. You could also use a more sophisticated instrument. Keeping it orthogonal to your face at all times and using eye protection, measure the angle between the Sun and the Moon from the moment they both become visible and then again just before the first one sets. The angle will change only about six degrees throughout a twelve hour period, not enough to notice a change in phase with the naked eye.
