I tend to take reusable bags with me (made from fabric similar to what umbrellas are made of), load my groceries into them at the check-out and then put the bags in the (cheapo) panniers (that I leave on the bike 24/7), one bag per pannier.
At home, I take the bags out again and carry "the loot" upstairs. Saves quite a bit of packing, repacking and unpacking for me, too.
