which part sounds unnecessary?
the company that built the shopify<>distributor integration did a really great job. the distributor doesn't provide a modern API; it's some insane FTP-based invoice system where you have to upload purchase orders and jump through awful hoops to get fulfillment status updates (for the purpose of updating shopify). $300/month is definitely steep, and I expect that will come way down once they have a competitor - but at the moment they simply don't.

the other option - which is not off the table, given our very low sales volume - is I could ditch the shopify integration and do a "monkey behind a curtain" style thing where i literally place the orders myself with the distributor, using the customer's address as the ship-to, and my own credit card as the payment. that would technically work and is definitely scrappier, but it just feels wrong.
