The film laments "what has been lost", but we are never actually given a clear indication of what that is. We are to fill it in ourselves I suppose, but the question is "with what?"

Clearly we are not meant to fill in that gap with the culture in which the story is set nor in the culture which birthed the tale (Homer's Odyssey is itself filled with anachronisms, because it is set in a distant past already).

So what? Modern day "liberal values"? What is the cultural context?
