the big dilemma in Britain is many of the *people* generally do like /some/ left wing policies such as renationalisation, the NHS and well funded public services, but baulk at paying extra taxes for them. They are also highly car-dependent and push back on any "Green" policy that might restrict car use and many have excessive paranoia about immigration (and ignore its positive benefits such as the overseas health and social care workers)
