I spent most of my life pre-ACA without health insurance, or only at intermittent times based on who I was working for. I didn't have health insurance the entire time I was in grad school. I didn't have it for most of my 20s and 30s. Which meant having to go to the ER when I had asthma. And then just never being able to pay for it.
