as a person who lived under a military occupation surrounded by dictatorships, I've been hearing the transitive "disappear" ever since I learned English. Particularly in the Arab spring, where the Egyptian and Syrian governments would disappear protestors in underground prisons. Heck I've even heard it in the context of the American war on Iraq.
