I don't remember hearing/seeing "disappeared" being used as a transitive verb until the last, I dunno, few years or so? Maybe it's been a bit longer because our timeline hasn't really seemed since pre-2016. But even though I know it's not incorrect, it still just short circuits my brain a little ("they disappeared her...").
