Long covid is sometimes described as "lingering symptoms" e.g. a persistent cough or tiredness, but I think it makes more sense to understand it as the chronic stage of a viral illness. As with other viruses, the chronic stage of a covid infection can come weeks, months or even years after the acute stage has ended.
