Funny you mention backpacking! 2 days ago I came home from an overnight backpacking trip. I walked just over 12km with 14.5kgs on my back with nearly 180m elevation. Next day (yesterday) did my usual 7km afternoon run and I felt great. I am 59. I do think there is something to this approach!
