5/4 (sorry) more recently, in secondary education at least, there's been a shift from coursework to exams to avoid cheating (plagiarism, AI).
As I mention above, for my first two years of uni, I got respectable marks in exams by stuffing my head with information, but my coursework marks were consistently better because I had the time and headspace to think creatively and read widely, whereas the exam room was like 'panic panic panic, limited time to show I've been listening all year!!!'
