It's definitely possible my experience in my degree programs as well as my work in academia and the private sector was atypical. Your reply suggests you don't have much respect for your colleague's judgement and that experience varies drastically from my own experience. But suggesting their behavior is 100-110% seems to clash with your critique of their "noithing-but-ism" but, of course, anecdotal information is limited in it's capacity to model reality.
