Where I grew up the fox squirrels were the typical neighborhood squirrels. Where I live now I only find them on the trails.
Gray squirrels are the neighborhood squirrels here and I'm not sure I'd seen one prior to moving here. Couldn't believe how scrawny they were, lol.

Huge range of plumage among the juvenile/immature migrant eagles that visited us this yr. Cool to be able to identify individuals while editing. My guess is a 2-3yr old but it take 4-5yr for adult plumage so its not easy to tell.

The visiting migratory eagles have moved on and have been replaced w/ large flocks of gulls like this ring-bill. In the past when there were large eagle #'s followed by large gull #'s, it's often followed by a large # of white pelicans🤞

Lol! I mostly agree but I have a few old photography friends on there and I'm only on social media for photography. We all left twitter when Musk destroyed it (I left when he bought it) and some of them chose Bluesky 🤷‍♂️ though they have Mastodon accounts.

I didn't know that Canada geese & mallards ate fish until I witnessed it the 1st time. Shad are too big to swallow so they shred them w/ their bills. They frequently let go of the fish to get a better grip so theft attempts are constant.

The migratory eagle population visiting us is much shyer than the local eagles we have year round. So much so that I've gotten mostly flight photos so far. Hopefully I'll find a braver 1 or 2 so I can get closer for some more portraits 🤞.

This time of yr I typically see a few random waterfowl species that hang w/ the typical Canada geese/mallards at the nearby dam. This ♀ common goldeneye duck from Tuesday is a diving species. They are especially fun to watch 👍.

Counted ~30 eagles along a 1 mi stretch of the Iowa River yesterday. A nice woman on the trail informed me that there are more ~7-8 am. Said she stopped counting at 100.
All ages present now like this adult w/ a smidge of brown on the white.

It's astonishing to watch a large bird like a bald eagle spot fish, hover, & turn on a dime above a relatively small area open water. Especially given the large # of eagles we have right now in addition to the large # of waterfowl.

Exactly! What's fun is that it helps you tell them apart so you can pick out individuals👍. One year I got photos of them at every stage of development 1-5yr but I haven't seen younger fledgling (yr 1, all brown) so far this year.

When I were a wee-photogapher my tracken skells tweren't sa gad.
I'd often lose the bird for the trees.

Trumpeter swan on the Iowa River (Monday).
A lifer for me.
When the river freezes, I often find less common (for me) species mingled w/ the Canada geese/mallards at the dam. That's why I (unlike sane people, lol) am a fan of cold winters 🤷‍♂️ 🥶.

It takes 4-5 yrs for a bald eagles to get their adult feathers. Adult eagles are gorgeous birds but juvenile eagles like this one from Monday have incredible plumage as well 👍.

The # of eagles fishing in the open water below the Iowa River Power dam yesterday has roughly double from last Friday (apologies for the crappy video). Notice the ones in the trees too. The temps mean the river should stay frozen all week. This is gonna be fun👍

Layering is vital in cold weather.
Subzero windchill today. Stopped by the river briefly on Friday. Found 7-8 bald eagles fishing in the open water next to the dam. Gonna have to see if I can't get some pics this afternoon.

I'm not certain that the river froze last year. If it did it was only briefly. Unlike everyone else I get excited when it gets this cold, lol. This is when I come across the less common waterfowl species as they gather together with the usual Canada geese and mallards in the open water at the base of the dam. Along with the eagles it's a lot of fun👍

Very cool! I don't hear their calls very often and I usually find them chilling perched in a tree.
Friend had a Cooper's perched in the tree across the street. It was making such a racket that neighbors were coming out to see what the heck was going on, lol. Pretty sure it was a recent fledgling still trying to get its parents to feed it.

Too cold to photograph but did make it down to the river briefly. The great thing about this weather is that the river freezes. Found 7-8 bald eagles hanging out around the open water below the dam. I just need that windchill above -5°F so the frostbite danger is lower and I'll be back 👍

Oh, and thank you the photo compliment! That was a fun shot. I was tracking a flying Cooper's hawk to see where it would land. When I lowered my lens I saw the big one up on the wire across the street. Could have easily walked by w/o seeing it, lol. A friend lives in that neighborhood and there are always raptors around👍

I just happened to notice.
The first time I saw birds take baths in snow I was like, "that makes sense".
In extreme cold I've watched Canada geese violently thrash around in the snow. At 1st I thought the goose was having a seizure and was weirded out till I looked at the photos later and realized it was trying to knock off the ice that had built up on its wings while it waited out the cold on the frozen river.

Had heard that too a few yrs ago (nature documentary?) & was indulging in a bit of anthropomorphism, lol. Had always wondered about bird's feet in the cold prior to learning what they do. It's a really cool adaptation👍.
Now (& seriously not trying to look precocious, lol) I've seen bird's eat snow (especially sparrows and smaller birds) on many occasions. I just assumed people knew that 🤷‍♂️ though I'm not in the least bit an expert.

Not a problem. I understand and your response to me gently chiding you for adopting an extraordinarily patronizing tone regarding my statements and experience is not at all surprising. We engineers are a simple people slavishly devoted to mechanistic thinking and I am clearly out my depth. Perhaps, in the future, every engineer will be paired with a philosopher to keep us on the straight and narrow, hmm?
Alternatively, never try to critique a critic, I guess.

"not to hold back" is the opposite of humility. Making grandiose statements is neither rational, scientific, nor useful. If you don't believe so, simply re-read your own reactions since I suggested philosophers were superfluous. Does that help you understand other's reactions to your own claims?

Didn't criticize your paper and reading the abstract is why I replied. I stated the information appeared redundant and outdated given my experience. That was my point. Your response has been "it isn't". You state that in your paper "It should be a core part of your scientific training". I stated it was. You said, it isn't or that my experience must be the exception🤷‍♂️.

It's definitely possible my experience in my degree programs as well as my work in academia and the private sector was atypical. Your reply suggests you don't have much respect for your colleague's judgement and that experience varies drastically from my own experience. But suggesting their behavior is 100-110% seems to clash with your critique of their "noithing-but-ism" but, of course, anecdotal information is limited in it's capacity to model reality.

I guess I'm a bit more worried that some think that "nothing-but-ism" is a common practice in the sciences. But I think that may be the part of the disconnect between philosophy and the sciences. Scientists and engineers are taught to to keep an open mind and understand the limitations of our constructs and philosophers are there to remind us to do so.

I'd have to disagree with "notorious" machine world view. I think engineers understand the limitations of their own models but mechanistic models can produce perfectly acceptable results and there's nothing philosophically wrong with using them. While we should always be cognizant of what is or may be missing I also think your view of engineer's may be a bit outdated.

I'm a little confused. All that you describe as how science should be is exactly how I encountered science when I received my engineering degrees. It is how I understand science, it is what I was taught, and I don't have a degree in philosophy. I'm not clear on some of your discussion of "levels" and while models can not produce the "truth" what they model correctly is often far more important than the assumptions that make them flawed🤷‍♂️.

We're in the midst of a cold snap so sections of the Iowa river may freeze. That tends to push the wildlife to the open water below the dam which makes them easy pickings photo-wise. Headed down there tomorrow to see what the sitch is🤞
