One aspect of countries applying tariffs, especially on consumer goods, is that domestic prices also rise (because of the weakened competition).

I've seen it suggested that the US government will use “non-legislative persuasion” to prevent companies from raising prices on domestic goods, and I don't know what that's a euphemism for.
