Poor whites in the South turned out to defend slavery then, and the south is exporting fascism to the rest of the US now -- with decisions that are being made by people who were elected with their support.

I see no reason to forgive and forget. Historical memory is non-negotiable: people living there are going to have to get used to hearing that insofar as they keep that culture (which they are) they are bad people descended from other bad people.
