Then came the One China/Puotonghua campaign, and their fierce institutional policies in Malaysia and Singapore from the 90s to the early 2000s. I remember being ridiculed and discriminated against during that time, for speaking my mother's language. Students were whipped in schools.
The flames of "cultural revolution" have thankfully calmed down since, but the damage is already done it seems.
