I don't think something being supernatural implies it cannot be manipulated reliably. At least, not by definition. Another thing: Supernatural does not imply immaterial. Most of the Bible's miracles have material implications(curing a handicapped man, curing a blind man, multiplying fish, etc).
In the end, I would bet on the obvious answer: It's all fake mythos.
