Topological ugliness. I want the breakout board to be this big and complete, because I want other people to be able to make it and use it separate to the overall adapter I'm making; and I want the sockets to be upright like this, like they were on the original NES, because I want compatiblity with the NES Satellite - which uses line-of-sight IR - and other wireless multitaps.

If I stack the PCBs, I lose that, or the USB cable sprouts out the top. I don't love any option here.
