Q: Have you used matrix the chat platform and what are your thoughts on it?
A: I have used it.i currently use it to talk to some people. I will definitely not use it to talk to my mom in the close future. I don't consider it as a reliable method of communication.
Main issues I remember so far:
- "The sender device has not sent us keys for this message" messages from my Mom when she's at the countruhouse. It's a known issue for a long time for a slow unstable connections. Could be fixed in 2021 by compiling a custom app and reconfiguring your server. Probably can't be easily fixed this way today lol.
I guess developers live in places with stable fast connection where they have no risk of internet loss after power outage due to a hurricane or friendly drones of your neighbours. Or maybe they have backup starlinks for satellite internet. Good for them. Bad for everyone else. Don't trust matrix for emergency communication.
- unstable clients. Literally a few weeks ago Fluffychat corrupted it's own app database force logging me off. Good luck searching for recovery keys or another active session for verification especially when you're not behind a computer. Previously the database corruption was happening at the autumn as far as I remember.
I switched to Element X that lacks some functions but hopefully will be stable. Think twice about using non-mainstream client.

Imagine sending telegram links in an unencrypted chat to matrix.org user and they never receiving them because matrix.org temporarily filtering all messages mentioning telegram with no notifications to other people. Especially if it's a message like "hey username, drones near you go to shelter https://t.me/mon1tor_ua/64822 ".
I remember it happening at least once. I'm pretty sure it may happen again.
Once more, don't trust matrix for emergency communication. Encryption may get proken, non-ebcrypted messages may get silently filtered. And you'll never know when that happens.
Mostly these are my main concerns with matrix. If these issues get fixed, I may change my mind about it.
