I don't know... Granted I had an abnormal younger period, I was in the Navy pretty much right after high school, so missed out on the whole need to afford rent or food thing. And when I got out I had a good skill set in computers that coencided exactly when those skills could benefit me best.
Now when I did get out, my rent was about $800 and I brought home about $2000 it was better but still could be rough. Especially putting myself through school.
Of course the "mandatory" expenses, like phone, streaming services, rent not including utilities, higher end computer (or computer at all) does not help any.
As far as 40 hours being too much.... No sympathy, welcome to adulthood
