Indeed. It is misconception that Lincoln was elected on the mandate of emancipation. He never really held these views until he realised his army had to have a purpose. It was only after Jan 1863, after the Emancipation Proclamation that the Union Army began achieving success; although having better, imaginative, and bolder generals like Grant were super important.
