yes, the abolition movement coming out of New England was gathering steam, even to the point that Southern Democrats feared that the likely presidential candidate for the Democratic party was a Northerner Stephen Douglas, and that in his debates with Lincoln, who was considered lukewarm to not only retaining slavery but against extending it (mostly as he was not in thrall to Plantation money).
So they split the Dems into 3 candidates and....
