it still gives you control, though you may have to exercise your freedoms through others of your choice, if you don't wish to learn how to exercise them yourself. you also enjoy collective benefits: the same way you don't need to publish on newspapers yourself to enjoy the benefits of freedom of the press, when it comes to software freedom the fact that others can audit published software that you end up relying on benefits you in that their transparency and quality improve. when users don't become prisoners of software, the software (or rather those who control it) cannot abuse users as easily. see https://www.fsfla.org/~lxoliva/#Unshittify
