... my dad made us a new BBQ grill.
He found an old 55 gallon steel barrel and cleaned it up, took a cutting torch and cut it in half lengthwise, and welded on a couple of hinges.
Then, created a nice grate out of some heavy mesh wire and voila!
Sorta like the one pictured but a little more crude, you couldn't buy anything like it at the time, of course.
Lasted for years.
MANY folks had their own DIY grills.
