In Greek myths, Metis (the goddess of wisdom) was the first wife of Zeus and one of his earliest allies. However, he swallowed her to stop Metis from giving birth to a son who would overthrow him. While inside Zeus, Metis instead gave birth to Athena, who rose from Zeus' head.
