It's been combined and renamed as HST (harmonized sales tax) and is currently 13% on every purchase. That's after all the other taxes on income and property, which effectively makes the overall tax rate somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50%. And yet the government still operates at a deficit with a national debt ballooning into the statosphere (over $4.1 trillion CAD last I read from 10 years ago). I think that's largely because 1/4 of Canada's population works for the government, being paid well above the equivalent private sector salary, and with better job security, to essentially make life a constant hassle for the other 75% of the population who are actually productive citizens.
